Wanda Winsand

Wanda S. Winsand, age 92, passed away peacefully at the Marshfield Medical Center Hospital in Eau Claire, WI on Tuesday, March 11, 2025, surrounded by her three children.

Wanda was born to Elden and Selina Baumann on March 12, 1932, in the Town of Lincoln, in Buffalo County. She attended Gilmanton High School where she graduated with honors. While attending Gilmanton High School she met her best friend for life, Betty (Erickson) Larson. After graduation Wanda worked in Eau Claire, WI for a brief time.

She then met the love of her life, Roger Winsand and they were united in marriage at Lookout Lutheran Church on October 6th, 1951. Through that marriage their three children were born, Faye, Janet and Larry. They farmed in the Lookout area the first few years of their marriage. At the same time Wanda worked with her mother in-law, Mabel Winsand providing nutritious meals to the Dover school children. Roger, Wanda, and their family then moved to Mondovi where Wanda worked with Roger operating various gas stations and bulk gasoline and fuel oil businesses in the Mondovi area during the 1960’s and 1970’s.

Wanda attended the University of Eau Claire, earning a bachelor’s degree in social work in 1976. Her daughters, Faye (bachelor’s degree in social work) and Janet (bachelor’s degree in English) also earned their degrees from the University of Wisconsin-Eau Claire within the same calendar year as their Mother, which was quite the family accomplishment.

Wanda worked at the University of Wisconsin-Stout in Facilities Management and Business departments for several years and then transferred to the University of Wisconsin-Eau Claire where she worked in the Records Management and Financial Aid Departments for many years prior to her retirement.

Wanda had many interests during her life but her most cherished memories were spending time with her children, grandchildren, and great-grandchildren. She loved nothing more than being together with them over so many years.

Wanda was an incredibly talented individual who spent countless hours while her children were young, sewing and making clothes for them for that special Easter and Christmas outfit that she so proudly created on her own. She was also a dedicated Mother baking and decorating her special birthday cakes for each occasion with intricate designs that varied from a farm tractor to a butterfly or some other elaborate creation. Each family birthday and holiday was truly a special occasion. Wanda also had a passion for cooking and baking for her family and for those who visited over the years. She loved collecting and looking at cookbooks and shared her favorite recipes with anyone who would listen.

Her other passions during her life were photography and anything having to do with flowers. Wanda always had a camera on hand for any and every happening, even during the early years of marriage and while raising the three children. She spent countless hours over the past couple of years going through boxes and boxes of pictures she had saved spanning several decades of her life. She loved flowers whether it was planting them, looking at them, looking at pictures of flowers or even saving fresh flowers and drying them from a special birthday or other holiday.

Wanda’s other major highlight of her interesting life was a trip that she and her best friend, Betty (Erickson) Larson took to Europe where they visited the countries of Germany, Norway, Switzerland and Italy after she retired from the University of Wisconsin-Eau Claire

Wanda is survived by her three children, Faye (Carlis) Stuber, Janet Winsand and Larry (Eileen) Winsand. She is also survived by her three grandchildren, Angela (Chris) Leitz, Jeremy (Kim) Stuber and Samantha (Forest) Ownbey and by her five great-grandchildren, Brandon Leitz, Krystina Stuber, Carter Kingsley, Colton Kingsley, and Camden Kingsley. In addition, surviving family include her nieces and nephews, Mary (Bruce) Franke, David Baumann, Marilyn (Knospe) Jonas, Marvis Ann (Knospe) Harper and Renae (Knospe) Dierauer, Carol (Winsand) Peterson, Stanley (Judy) Winsand, Alan (Roxanne) Winsand, Ron Brantner, Barb (Don) Ellingson, Rod Landsworth, Mary (Neil) Segerstrom, Jim (Nancy) Plett, Dean Winsand, Dale (Lynette) Winsand, Peggy (Denny) Larson, Sonja (Gary) Steele, Fern (Allan) Fry and Ivy (John) Endris.

Wanda is preceded in death by her parents, Elden and Selina Baumann, brother Wes Baumann and many cousins, brother in-laws and sister in-laws.

Wanda experienced multiple physical challenges over the past few years. The family would like to thank the doctors and the staff at the Marshfield Medical Center in Eau Claire and Chippewa Manor in Chippewa Falls for their on-going care and support in assisting our Mother during these challenging times. These individuals who dedicate their lives to helping others are admirable and the level of care and compassion they provided to our Mother was beyond comprehension. We greatly appreciate all that you did to assist her.

The family would also like to thank the Central Lutheran Church staff, Mary Lunderville and Chaplain Gary Preston for their support. Gary developed an extraordinarily strong bond with our Mother over these past years and often visited her in person to engage in lively conversations that were the highlight of that particular week for our Mother. We thank him also for his on-going dedication and support that he provided to our family over the past several and exceedingly difficult days.

Funeral services will be at 11:00 AM on Saturday, March 29th at Central Lutheran Church, Mondovi, WI with Pastor Mara Ahles-Iverson and Chaplain Gary Preston officiating. Burial will be in the Lookout Lutheran Church cemetery.

Visitation will be on Friday, March 28 from 4:00 – 7:00 PM at the Talbot Funeral Home, Mondovi, WI and one hour prior to services at the church on Saturday.
