Shirley Ellen Werlein, age 84 of Modena, WI passed away peacefully on Wednesday, January 29, 2013 at Mayo Health Systems in Eau Claire following a short battle with cancer.
She was born on October 1, 1929 in Wheeler, WI a daughter of James A. and Ellen I. (Morley) Eastman.
Shirley graduated from Gilmanton high school with the class of 1947.
In her early years, Shirley worked at the Chicken plant in Eleva, now known as family farms. For several years, Shirley was employed as a waitress and bartender at establishments such as the White Pig, Palmer Peterson’s, and served as the manager of the Prairie Inn of Durand. Shirley spent the last 20 years as a home health care provider.
She was a longtime member of Modena Lutheran Church and occasionally would serve with the ladies aid. Shirley was also a member of the Sons of Norway.
Shirley loved to travel and had the opportunity to take trips to New Zealand, Australia and a cruise to the Caribbean Islands. Spending time up north, fishing and camping was a favorite pastime. She will be remembered as being a fabulous cook and for her love of gardening, canning and baking. Her family will miss their favorite breakfast, Aebleskivers, and being sent home from her house with an assortment of “goodies”, which often included homemade bread and pickles. Many a dance, Shirley could be found hop-waltzing to her favorite polka band. In her later years, Shirley found great enjoyment being with her grandchildren and her trips for breakfast and coffee with her friends from the surrounding area. Shirley was a lady that would always put the needs of others before her own. She will be remembered for her extreme love and devotion to her family.
Shirley will be sadly missed by her sons, Mike, Tom (Norma), Ronnie, Jack (Connie); daughters, Shelly (Dennis) Teigen and Shari Werlein; grandchildren, Malee Sandborn, Patti (James) Cowell, JoAnn Werlein, Kevin (Victoria) Werlein, Julie Werlein, JJ (Fiancée, Kimberly Peplinski) Werlein, Brad (Shelly) Meyer, Lisa Werlein, Sara (Fiancé, Nathan Trapp) Werlein, Jared Werlein, Joe Werlein, Amanda (Adam) Wolfe, Erica Johnson, Colter Luff, Jake Luff, Avery Wald; also by many loving great grandchildren and great-great grandchildren; siblings, Rachel Barlage, Norman (Delores) Eastman and Wayne (Shirley) Eastman; also by nieces, nephews other relatives, friends and her very special niece, Alice (Robert) Rosengren and her “#1” nephew, Jesse (Lisa) Hanson.
Besides her parents, Shirley was preceded in death by her son Darrell; grandson, Brian Meyer; siblings, Celia Sandberg; Leone Francis; Evelyn Alexander; Delores Plank; Mary Lee; Norma Jean Locknert; Elaine Eastman; Eva Dalgin, June Johnson and Glenn Eastman.
Funeral service will be held on Monday, February 3 at 11:00 AM at Modena Lutheran Church with Pastor Natalie Leske officiating.
Visitation will be on Sunday, February 2 from 1:00 PM until 4:00 PM at the Talbot Family Funeral Home, Mondovi Chapel and again on Monday from 10:00 AM until the hour of the service at the church. Burial will be at Modena Cemetery.
