Shirley Mae Rieck

Shirley Mae Rieck peacefully passed away on January 29, 2025. Born on October 4, 1948, to Donald and Ellen (Hoffman) Stoughton. She lived most of her life in Athens, WI. Shirley was married to Dennis Rieck, and together they had a son, Timothy Rae. They later divorced. Several years later she met James "Fritz" Birtzer in 1990. Shirley and Fritz shared many years of partnership together until Fritz's passing in July 2010.

Shirley possessed a quiet strength and a strong work ethic. She pursued her passion for beauty by attending cosmetology school in Eau Claire, WI, and was known for her signature permed hairstyle and always self-manicured nails. Throughout her career, she dedicated herself to various roles, including her work at Winona Industries, Tombstone Pizza, Mondovi Tractor, and Urne's Whitetail Bar and Grill.

Shirley found joy in simple pleasures and spending time with friends. She was an avid fan of tractor pulls, often capturing the excitement on video for her friends to enjoy. Shirley’s competitive side shone through her love of pool and bowling. Her love for dogs will always be remembered.

In recent years, Shirley moved to an apartment in Nelson, WI to be near her longtime friend, Kathleen Rieck. Unfortunately, after a broken hip in 2022, her health began to decline. She was then lovingly cared for at Eagle's Rest Assisted Living in Pepin, WI, surrounded by compassionate staff and the warmth of human connection including loving visits from her cousin Marge. Most recently, St Croix Hospice aided in her comfort.

Shirley was preceded in death by her son, Timothy, her partner Fritz, her parents, her sister Pearl Medes, and numerous cherished relatives, friends, and beloved pets, including her loyal canine companions Thor, Heidi, Punky, and Rellik.

Shirley will be deeply missed by all who knew her. Her gentle spirit and quiet humor will forever remain in our hearts.

A celebration of life will be at Urne Whitetail on Saturday February 15th, 2025 from 2-5pm. In leui of flowers, we'd request donations to be given to local humane society (Buffalo / Pepin Co).
