Norman A. Heck age 81 of Mondovi passed away peacefully on Tuesday, April 16 at Mayo Health System, Luther Campus.
Norbert Albert Heck was born on May 17, 1931 in Mondovi to the Late Albert and Hilga (Roetter) Heck.
He was baptized, confirmed and lifelong member of St. Paul’s Lutheran Church in the Town of Canton, Buffalo County.
Norman attended Heck Valley School in Canton Township graduating in 1945 from the 8th Grade. Following graduation, he worked on the family farm until he was drafted into the US Army on February 29, 1952. He served overseas in active duty for 13 months in the Korean War. He was honorably discharged on November 28, 1953 with the rank of Corporal. He transferred to the Army Reserve on November 29, 1953 with an honorable discharge from the US Army on March 31, 1960. Norman was the proud recipient of the following medals: Korean Service Medal with three bronze stars; the United Nations Service Medal the Good Conduct Medal and the 50th anniversary Korean Service Medal.
On May 17, 1954 he purchased a dairy farm and lived there until moving to the city of Mondovi in 1994.
ON August 22, 1959 he married Morrell Nelson at Norden Lutheran Church. To this union they had four children, Brian, Melony, Michele and Scott.
While operating the farm with his wife Morrell, he also was employed with other businesses. These included driving milk truck for his brother in law Clayton Nelson and others, Rockwell and Schultz Beer Distributing, Eleva Chicken Trucking Company, laying pipeline for Karl Frank, building homes for Rodney Ristow Construction, and the Durand Canning Co. for 17 years and Koller and Company. He continued to work on a friends farm during his semi-retirement years. He was treasurer of St. Paul’s Lutheran Church Cemetery Association from 1980-2012.
Norman was an active member of both the American Legion Post154 and the VFW Post 6711 both of Mondovi.
He enjoyed dancing, singing and listening to gospel and polka music, playing cards, fishing, gardening, word search puzzles, but mostly, spending time with his grandchildren and great grandchildren.
Norman will be sadly missed by his wife of 53 years, Morrell of Mondovi; three children, Melony (Mark) Martin, Michele (Joey) Dziekan and Scott Heck all of Mondovi; 11 grandchildren, four great grandchildren, 2 step grandchildren and 2 step great grandchildren; sisters Phyllis Johnson, Lucille (Robert) Accola all of Mondovi; brothers, Harold (Betty) Heck of New Brighton, MN and Leigh (Elaine) Heck of Hillsboro, OR; sisters and brothers in law, Adeline Bauer, Clayton Nelson both of Mondovi, Susan Sullivan of Lake Geneva; Besides his parents, Norman was preceded in death by his son Brian; father & mother in law Ole and Anna Nelson; brothers in law, John Johnson, James Julson, and Roman Bauer; sister in law, Betty Nelson; nephews Glenn and David Julson.
Funeral services will be held on Saturday, April 20 at 1:00 PM at St. Paul’s Lutheran Church, Canton, with Pastor Daniel Pfaffe officiating. Burial will be at the church cemetery. A time of visitation and support for Norman’s family will be held on Friday, April 19 from 4:00 PM until 8:00 PM at the Talbot Family Funeral Home, Mondovi chapel and again on Saturday from Noon until the hour of the service at the church.
Norman’s sense of humor will be missed but will always be remembered.
