Natalie May Abbott Steinke, age 79, of Mondovi, passed away on Sunday, April 15 at Sacred Heart Hospital, Eau Claire.
Natalie was born on March 7, 1933 to Martha Scrugham and Edward Patrick in San Francisco, CA. After two weeks, she was given up for adoption to Roy and Nora Abbott of Fresno, CA and was their only child. At three weeks of age she was dedicated by them to the Lord and was committed to him her entire life. She was blessed to have been married to LaMoine Allen Steinke for just shy of 60 years and was the proud mother to Eric Roy (Laurie), Scott Carle (Wanda) and David Gregory (Wendy Harrington) Steinke; grandmother to Audrey Maureen (Mike Weber), Melissa Mae (Phil) Woodford and Nicole Lynn (Jon) Kohut, great grandmother to Jayden Allen, Collin Paul and Karson Edward; She was also a step-grandmother to Joseph and Michele Veleta and step great grandmother to Trevor Veleta-Ols.
Natalie attended schools in California, graduating from San Bernardino High School in 1950 and Valley College. She and LaMoine lived in Mondovi for many years and she was the church secretary at Zion Lutheran Church. She was also employed by Telephone Secretaries and Sears Catalog department. In her 50’s she found her career as an assisted living specialist and a property manager at Landmark Company. She was an active and devoted member of Peace Lutheran Church in Eau Claire and volunteered there as an office assistant for several years.
In 1979, she became acquainted with her birth mother, Martha Scrugham Kievit and they had a close, loving relationship until her death in 2008. She also was able to meet and become a special friend to her half-sisters, Catherine “Mimi” and Nancy Patrick and aunt to their children. These became extremely important people in her life. She will be remembered by her close friends the “Fifi’s” and their enduring friendships over 30 years. Also very special was her “other” family, Don and Loyes Hemstock and their children, Susan Roberts, Kathryn Youngberg, Peter Hemstock, Sarah Hemstock and John Hemstock.
Natalie will ultimately be remembered as a lady that put the needs of family before her own. Her family, every single one of them held a special place in her heart, especially her grandchildren and great-grandchildren.
A memorial service to celebrate the life of Natalie and her devotion to her lord and savior will be held on Saturday, April 21 at 11:00 AM at Peace Lutheran Church, Eau Claire. Prior to the service, a memorial gathering will be held from 9:00 AM until the hour of the service.
Burial took place at St. Paul’s Lutheran Cemetery, Town of Canton, Buffalo County in a private family committal.
