Mildred Elvera Huebner passed away on Saturday, October 26, 2013, at age 89 at Pepin Manor Nursing Home. She was born Mildred Elvera Schneider to Selma (Giese) and Edward Schneider in Alma, WI, on February 16, 1924. She was one of eight children born to Selma and Edward. Her sister, Phyllis, and brother, Frederick, still reside in Alma, WI, while her brother, Samuel and his wife LaVonne, live in Winona, MN. Mildred graduated from Alma High School, Class of 1942, attended nursing school in Wausau, WI, and joined the Women’s Army Corps during the Korean War. While stationed in Texas, she met and married Hilmer (Bud) Huebner. They were married for 61 years before his death in 2012. They lived for a time in Texas and then moved to Alma, WI, where they raised their five children. Mildred operated a day care from her home for 45 years. She loved children, welcoming many into her family as though they were her own. She served on the St. Paul & St. Luke’s United Church of Christ Board and as Sunshine Chair of the Women’s Guild. She was a lifetime member of the Alma Historical Society and Legion Post 224 of Alma, WI. She enjoyed helping with community and church activities, singing in the church choir, cooking and baking for numerous bake sales and pot luck fundraisers. She was especially proud of winning first prize for her delicious homemade fudge during many community festivals. Mildred loved animals, spending many years working with her human friends at the local chapter of Friends for Animals.
Mildred is survived by her children, Thomas Huebner, Kathleen Olson, Candace Huebner, Timothy Huebner and Mary Rivers; grandchildren, Kim Huebner Hall, Nick Huebner, Tiffany Jensen Gallagher, Annie Jensen, Michelle Rivers and Rachel Rivers; great-grandchildren, Garret and Paige Hall; Eleanor, Isaac, Josephine and Emmett Gallagher; and Oliver Jensen. She was preceded in death by her husband, Hilmer (Bud) Huebner, her sisters, Ruth Byington and Blanche Schneider, and brothers, Oakley and Benjamin Schneider.
Visitation will take place on Saturday, November 2, 2013, from 10:00 a.m. until the time of the service at the Talbot Funeral Home – Alma Chapel, 340 Wisconsin 35, Alma, WI, phone (608) 685-3294. The memorial service will begin at the Talbot Chapel at 11:00 a.m. A reception luncheon will follow the memorial service at United Church of Christ in Alma, WI. Mildred will be inurned at a later date at the Tell Cemetery in Tell, WI.
