Michael Birtzer, Sr., age 74, of Mondovi passed away peacefully on Monday, August 5, 2024, at Mayo Clinic Health Systems Eau Claire.
Mike was born on June 10, 1950, in Eau Claire, WI to Loren Birtzer and Beverly (McLaughlin) Birtzer. He attended Altoona Elementary School before moving to Mondovi. He graduated from Mondovi High School.
Mike married Susan Rustad and to this union three children were born: Michael A. Birtzer, Jr., Curtis Birtzer, and Patricia (Birtzer) Meyer. They later divorced but were both amazing grandparents together for all of their grandchildren.
He worked for Robinson’s Floral in Mondovi, for the Mondovi Police Department as a Patrol Officer and later as the Chief of Police. He worked for Marten Transport, Ltd. until his retirement. He was known as “Mikey” to many of the employees at Marten. He enjoyed working with everyone there and it kept him young at heart.
He loved to be out on the water fishing, gardening, working on his lawn, feeding the birds and watching animals, and enjoying nature. He was a good golfer in his younger years and loved watching all sports. He attended his first Green Bay Packer game at Lambeau Field with his sons Curtis and Mike and his first Badger Basketball Game with Mike.
Mike will be remembered as a one-of-a-kind guy who always had a smile on his face and a great sense of humor. He was an amazing dad and Papa.
Mike is survived by his children: Michael, Jr. (Diana) Birtzer, Curtis (Angie Newcomer) Birtzer, and Patricia (Neil) Meyer: his grandchildren ChrisDee, Vincent, Dannelle, Sienna, Aaden, Savannah, Cole, Jase, and Taylor: his sisters Lynn (John) Leirmo and Roxanne (Rick) Skaggs and his sister-in-law Sue Birtzer: great-grandchildren, nieces & nephews, cousins, and other relatives and friends.
He is preceded in death by his parents, his brothers Terry, Steve, Victor, and nephews.
Thank you to his special neighbors. He always told everyone he had the best neighbors and of course, thank you to all the employees at Joe’s Shop Kwik. He enjoyed his trips “down to Joe’s.”
A memorial gathering will be held on Saturday, August 17, from 11am to 2pm with a short prayer following with Chaplain Gary Preston officiating following all at Talbot Family Funeral Home.
