Mabel Alice (Ellingson) Purrington, age 97 of Alma, WI passed away on Friday, January 5, 2018 at Pepin Health and Rehab. She was born one of ten children, on September 14, 1920 in Wood Lake, MN, the daughter of Elling and Clara (Podoll) Ellingson. Mabel graduated from Wood Lake High School in 1938. She married Leonard Purrington on July 25, 1940.
For many years, Mabel was an active member of Eastern Star, American Legion Auxiliary, St. Elizabeth hospital volunteer, Alma School volunteer and a volunteer for the American Cancer Society especially since she was a cancer survivor. Mabel was also active in her Bible Study group. Mabel was a homemaker for many years and she and her husband owned and operated the Buffalo County Journal and the Pepin Laker newspapers from 1960-1985.
Mabel is survived by her son, Leonard “Chuck” Jr. of Berlin, Germany and his sons, Christopher Purrington and Eric (Teresa) Purrington both of Berlin, Germany, son, Barry Purrington of Eagan, MN and his daughter, Elena Purrington, daughter, Judy Purrington of San Jose, CA, daughter, Mary Jane (Roger) Cornelius of Racine, WI and their children, Megan Cornelius, Molly Cornelius and Patrick Cornelius and son, Bret (Renee) Purrington of Shakopee, MN and their children, Sean Purrington, Bradley Purrington and Jaclyn (Michael) Ramos; great-grandchildren, Ayden Purrington and Victoria, Charles and Catherine Ramos; numerous nieces and nephews; other relatives and many dear friends.
She was preceded in death by her parents; husband, Leonard; sisters, Elva Schlenner, Luverne Jacobson, Phyllis Sandell, Evelyn Bihner and Lorraine Sorensen; brothers, Kenneth, Lyman, Milton and Hiram Ellingson.
A funeral service will be held at Grace Memorial Episcopal Church, Wabasha, MN on Friday, January 12, 2018 at 11:00 am with Rev. Sherry Drysdale-Schruth presiding. A visitation will begin one hour prior to service. Mabel will be laid to rest next to her husband at Fort Snelling National Cemetery on Monday, January 15, 2018 at 10:30 am.
The family requests memorial donations go to the American Cancer Society or Grace Memorial Episcopal Church.
