LeRoy H. Schaffner, age 92, of Fountain City, passed away peacefully on Wednesday, March 21, 2018 at Winona Health System.
He was born on October 13, 1925 at home, a son of the late Louis and Helen (Haeuser) Schaffner. LeRoy lived on the family farm his entire life.
LeRoy was baptized at the Eagle Valley Church and attended and completed his education at Eagle Valley School.
On October 22, 1946, LeRoy was united in marriage to Anna Mae Ruben at the Evangelical Reformed Church now St. John’s United Church of Christ in Fountain City. To this union, four children were born. Anna Mae preceded LeRoy in death on May 13, 2007.
LeRoy was a longtime and faithful member of St. John’s UCC where he served on the church council. He also spent many years on the Eagle Valley Cemetery Board.
LeRoy’s life and heart was always on the farm where he was born and raised. He still would help with baling hay well in to his 80’s. He loved sitting on his porch watching his family do field work and looking for the ‘white deer’ to pay a visit.
Some of LeRoy’s past-times included woodworking and dancing to old time music.
He will be remembered of his soft presence and kind heart. Those who knew LeRoy, especially his family will remember him for his deep faith, love of the farm and devotion to family.
LeRoy will be sadly missed by his three sons, David (Susan) Schaffner, Dale (Jenny) Schaffner, Neal (Diane) Schaffner and his daughter, LuAnn (Dale) Schmidtknecht, all of Fountain City; grandchildlren, Lisa (James) Bremer, Jeffrey (Holly) Schaffner, Matthew (Jill) Schaffner; Allison (Dave) Schleipp, Jared (Carley) Schaffner, Jason (Heather Secrist) Schaffner, Jill (Dean) Engelmann and Luke (Lisa) Schaffner; Eric (Jan) Schaffner, Jessica (Greg) Osborn, Mark (Tiffany) Schaffner; Amy (Derrick) Hammer and John Schmidtknecht; 24 great grandchildren and one on the way; sister in law, Belva Ruben; very special friends who were like family, Karen (Gabe) Pehler and their family.
Besides his parents, LeRoy was preceded in death by his loving wife, Anna Mae and his brother, Lloyd.
A memorial service will be held on Monday, March 26, 2018 at 11:00 AM at St. John’s United Church of Christ with Pastor Gregory Ferriss officiating. Inurnment will follow at Eagle Valley Cemetery. Visitation will be on Sunday, March 25 from 2:00 PM until 6:00 PM and again on Monday from 10:00 AM until the hour of the service all at the church.
