Joseph Palmer “Joe” Helgeson, Jr. age 78 of the Town of Dover, Buffalo County passed away on Monday, November 21 at St. Mary’s Hospital in Rochester with his loving and devoted family at his side.
He was born on October 8, 1933 at home in the Town of Chimney Rock, Trempealeau County a son of the late Joseph and Elvina (Knudtson) Helgeson, Sr.
On September 24, 1955 Joe was united in marriage to Eleanor Klopp at Evanger Lutheran Church in Trempealeau county. To this union, six children were born.
Together with his wife, they dairy farmed in the Town of Dover, where they resided most of there lives. Joe also hauled milk for all the area farmers.
Joe was the owner and operator of Helgeson back hoe and excavating.
What Joe enjoyed mostly was driving bus for the Gilmanton School district, which he enjoyed for over 30 years. Joe served on the Town of Dover as there Supervisor.
Joe was a long time and faithful member of Good Shepherd Lutheran Church serving on several committees during his membership
Joe was a very accomplished gardener and loved to give away the fruits of his labor and his sausage making abilities. He will be remembered for his dry, witty and quick sense of humor, hosting family events at Grandpa Joe’s Campground. But what Joe will be remembered for is the ability to be friends with all he met and the deep love and devotion for his family.
Joe will be dearly missed by his wife of the past 56 years, Eleanor of Independence; children, Daniel (Alice) Helgeson of Chippewa Falls, Donald (Deb) Helgeson of Gilmanton, Michael (Linda) Helgeson of Gilmanton and Tamera Helgeson of Gilmanton; twelve grandchildren, Bradley (Kim) Helgeson, Julie (Stephan) Kolk, Bryan (Cassie) Helgeson, Carrie (Mike) Conrad, Rachel (Travis) Lessman, Kyle (Sadie) Downing, Christopher Ziebell, Nicole Schmidt, Kevin Schmidt, Jordan (Kayla) Helgeson, Jenna Kuba and Jessa Kuba; thirteen great-grandchildren, Autumn, Brooklyn, Jaxson, Ellie Jo, Brayden, Josh, Maddy, Allie, Dalton, Carter, Dillon, Big Ayden and Little Ayden and one on the way. Three brothers, John (Gayle) Helgeson, David (Faye) Helgeson and Jeffrey Helgeson; five sisters, Darlene (Gary) Rogholt, Rose (Monty) Loomis, Pearl (Joe) Berlin, Eldora (Mike) Ives, Diane (Dick) Josifek; brother in law, Roger Nyseth; also by many nieces, nephews, other relatives and friends.
Besides his parents, two sons, Douglas and Keith, a grandson, Dustin and a sister, Joan Nyseth preceded Joe in death.
A funeral service will be held on Saturday, November 26 at 11:00 AM at Good Shepherd Lutheran Church, rural Mondovi with Pastor David Bangert officiating. Burial will follow at the church cemetery. Visitation will be held on Friday, November 25 from 4-7 PM at the Talbot-Poeschel Funeral Home of Mondovi.
