Janice Rose Weiss, age 87, of Mondovi, Wis., passed away peacefully on Wednesday, May 22, 2024, at Mayo Clinic Health System in Eau Claire.
She was born on June 15, 1936, in Hesch Valley, Buffalo County, to the late Rudolph and Mary (Sendelbach) Pronschinske.
Janice attended Arcadia Schools, graduating with the Arcadia High School Class of 1954. She then attended the Buffalo County Teachers College, graduating in 1956.
She taught second grade at Mondovi Public Schools for one year. Many of her former students remember her fondly.
Janice was united in marriage to Gene Weiss on June 26, 1957, at St. Boniface Catholic Church in Waumandee, Wis. Eight children were born to this loving union of 60 years.
In 1961, Janice and her husband purchased a farm in French Valley in Gilmanton Township. They farmed cooperatively with Gene's parents and siblings. She helped her husband on the farm and worked hard as a homemaker to provide a loving and comfortable home for her family.
Janice served her family tirelessly through time spent cooking and baking, doing laundry, tending to a large garden and flock of chickens, as well as maintaining a swimming pool, which later became a neighborhood gathering spot for friends and family. She had a particular love for her peonies, roses and strawberries.
As an active and faithful member of Sacred Heart of Jesus Catholic Church, Janice was a humble servant of God as an honorary member of the Parish Council of Catholic Women, Rosary leader and sacristan. She found great comfort in her Catholic faith, love of the Lord, the Blessed Virgin Mary and praying the Rosary.
For more than 25 years, Janice was an active volunteer at the American Lutheran Home in Mondovi. She would bring Holy Communion to residents, participate in various activities, socialize and simply spend time visiting residents of the home.
Janice was a wonderful baker and was known for her delicious coffee cakes, which were always coveted delicacies at the Sacred Heart Fall Festival. She also volunteered her baking skills in the bakery at Old Time Farm Fest, hosted annually by her sister and brother-in-law.
Janice enjoyed playing cards with several card groups, hand quilting and embroidering, puzzles, bowling leagues, bingo and travel. Her travels included many states, Europe and Canada.
She was an avid fan of Wisconsin sports teams, especially the Milwaukee Brewers, Badger men’s basketball and Badger women’s volleyball, having attended games of each team.
Janice will be forever remembered for her love and dedication to her entire family,
especially her grandchildren. She took great pride in attending their sporting and musical events.
Janice will be deeply missed by her sister: Anna Schmitt; eight children: Michael (Brian Ness) Weiss, Steven Weiss, Kathleen (Craig) Oesau, Max Weiss (Laura Dregney), Greg (Micci) Weiss, Donovan (Amanda Mikesell) Weiss, Karen (Darrell) Larson and Jason Weiss; grandchildren: Calvin Peterson (Nicole Johnson), Nash Weiss, Dustin Oesau, Devin Oesau, Derrick (Stephanie) Weiss, Ashley (Jordan) Bauer, Brody Larson, Lance Larson, Anna Jarvis, Mason Mikesell, Jayden Mikesell and Bennett Mikesell; great grandchildren: Rhett Bauer, Ezra Johnson, Ivan Johnson, Kaydence Johnson and Brock Krueger; many relatives and dear friends.
Janice was preceded in death by her parents; husband: Gene; siblings: Doris Filla, Leora Skroch, Robert Pronschinske, Rita Bork and Rudolph Proschinske; in-laws, other family members and friends.
A visitation will be held at Talbot Family Funeral Home in Mondovi on Monday, May 27, 2024, from 4-7 p.m. and again at Sacred Heart Catholic Church in Mondovi on Tuesday, May 28, from 9:30 a.m. until the time of her Mass of Christian Burial at 11:00 a.m. Interment will follow at the parish cemetery.
