Gordon E. Abts “Gordie” age 89, Fountain City, passed away peacefully in the presence of his loving family on Thursday, July 5, 2018 at Sauer Memorial Home, Winona.
He was born on September 8, 1928 in Fountain City, a son of the late Elmer and Luvern (Haeuser) Abts.
Gordon attended and graduated from Fountain City High School. Following graduation, on October 27, 1950 he entered and served the United States as a soldier in the United States Army during the Korean War, honorably discharged on September 5, 1952 earning the silver star medal of honor for showing gallantry in action against an enemy of the United States.
On February 17, 1995, Gordie was united in marriage to Carol Mahutga at St. Mary Catholic Church in Fountain City. Gordon and Carol brought together seven children and raised them as one family.
Gordie was a 40 year employee for Roettinger Construction as a mason in Cochrane. After retiring in 1988, Gordie and his wife, Carol began custodial duties at St. Mary’s Catholic Church in Fountain City. He was an avid Green Bay Packers fan and enjoyed watching a variety of different sporting events or spending time with family at his favorite restaurant, the Monarch Public House in Fountain City. One of Gordie’s most treasured memories was the day he traveled to Washington D.C. on the Freedom Honor Flight for Veterans, which was sponsored by his dear friend, John Harrington.
Gordie will be sadly missed by his wife of 23 years, Carol of Fountain City; his children, Rachel (Danny) Laehn of Fountain City, Roger Abts of Fountain City, Ronald (Anita) Abts of Independence, WI, Ryan (Wanda) Abts of Galesville, WI, Susan Wessin of Carver, MN, Lori (Nacer Adib) Wessin of Chaska, MN and Melanie (Bill) Pronschinske of Waumandee; grandchildren, Cory Laehn, Chris Laehn, Crystal Abts, Tyler Brown, Rayanna Kave, Regan Brown, Jeremy Pronschinske, Mikala Pronschinske and Luke Corwin; two great grandchildren, Bearett and Dakoda Kave; one brother, Darrold (Darlene) Abts; one sister, Sharon Danielson; also by nieces, nephews, other relatives and friends.
Besides his parents, Gordie was preceded in death by, brother Neil Abts and his sister, Doris Wolfe.
A Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated on Saturday, July 14 at 11:00 AM at St. Boniface Catholic Church. Burial with full military honors will be at St. Mary’s Catholic Cemetery, Fountain City. A time of visitation and support will be held on Friday, July 13, 2018 from 4:00 PM until ending with a prayer and scripture service at 7:00 PM. Visitation will continue on Saturday from 10:00 AM until the hour of the Mass.
