Gertrude O. Quarberg, age 91, of Nelson, passed away on Sunday, October 21, 2018 at Chippewa Valley Hospital in Durand.
She was born on May 23, 1927, a daughter of the late Thor and Olena (Amdahl) Sande.
Gertrude attended and graduated from Nelson High School and then attended Buffalo County Normal School where she obtained her teaching certificate which was a high point in her life.
On September 1, 1951, Gertrude was united in marriage to Merle G. Quarberg at Lyster Lutheran Church. To this union, four children were born. Merle Preceded Gertrude in death in August of 1990.
Gertrude was a teacher at Sunny Brook, Burnside and Rose Valley which were all one room school houses. Following her marriage, Gertrude began working side by side with her husband, Merle, on the family farm in Norwegian Valley.
Gertrude was a longtime, devoted and faithful member of Lyster Lutheran Church where giving of herself in so many ways, such as the church organist, a Sunday school teacher, quilting groups and various ladies groups.
Gertrude enjoyed to play cards, play bingo, crochet’, gardening and was so proud to have fulfilled a lifelong dream of traveling to Norway. She loved spend time with family and friends, especially her grandchildren and great grandchildren.
Gertrude is survived by Lynette (Dennis) Pank of Bloomer, Thomas (Janese) Quarberg of Alma, John Quarberg of Nelson and Joel Quarberg of Nelson; grandchildren, Jeremy (Sara) Pank of Strum, Denise (Rene) Medina of Durand, Isaac (Beth) Quarberg of Shoreview, MN, Matthew (Hadley Murphy) Quarberg of Alma, Garrett Quarberg of Red Wing and Gabriella Miller of Red Wing; 7 great grandchildren; her sister, Anna Sande of Pepin; sisters in law, Lorene Sande of Pepin, Pat Quarberg of Prairie du Sac and Rosetta Quarberg of Arkansaw, WI and also by nieces, nephews, other relatives and friends.
Besides her parents and husband, Gertrude was preceded in death by two brothers, Ole Sande and George Sande and one sister, Severine Sande Sahnow.
Funeral services will be held on Thursday, October 25, 2018 at 11:00 AM at Lyster Lutheran Church in the Town of Nelson with Pastor Michael Vetsch officiating. Burial will follow at the church cemetery. A visitation will be held on Wednesday, October 24 from 4:00 PM until 7:00 PM at the Talbot Family Funeral Home, Alma Chapel and again at the church on Thursday one hour prior to the service.
