Donald D. Hanson

Donald D. Hanson, age 90, of Mondovi, passed away peacefully on Thursday, February 8, 2024 at Heritage Court Memory Care in Eau Claire while under the care of St. Croix Hospice.  He was born on April 3, 1933 in Eau Claire, the son of the late Joseph and Mabel (Bue) Hanson.

Donald attended and graduated from Mondovi High School with the class of 1951. 

On April 3, 1953, Donald began his honorable service to his country as a soldier stationed in Korea in the United States Army during the Korean War.  Donald was honorably discharged from active duty on January 31, 1955.

Following his discharge, Donald attended and graduated from Minnesota School of Business with a degree in accounting.

On January 31, 1956, Donald was united in marriage to Alma Jean Rud.  To this union, four children were born.  (Alma) Jean preceded Donald in death on April 28, 2008.

Donald began a longtime career at Aladdin Manufacturing in Minneapolis, MN and would become the office manager in accounting.

Donald married Ruth Dregney-Kite on July 3, 2009.

He was a life member of the American Legion and VFW posts both of Mondovi and is a past Commander of the VFW.   Donald was also a longtime faithful member of Central Lutheran Church in Mondovi.

Donald enjoyed reading, taking long walks and woodworking, where many of his creations have now become treasures.  Donald even built an “A” frame cabin on Deer Lake in Grand Rapids, MN, a project that he was always proud of.

Donald will be remembered for impeccable organizational skills and his kind and humane heart and love for animals, especially dogs. His grandchildren will always remember their grandpa for his silly and great sense of humor.   His personality was one that was loved by many and will be missed by all those blessed to know him.

Donald will be sadly missed by his wife, Ruth; children, Cheryl (Curt) Jansen, Cindy (Steve) Althouse, David (Nancy) Hanson and Suzy (Tom) Wilson; and his 3 step children, Tom (Maxine), David (Lisa) and Karen (John) Pomeroy; grandchildren, Laura, Jeremy (Carrie), Jill (Jason), Melinda (Kaveh), Miranda (Josh), Allie (Nick), Aaron (Jenny), Andrew and Alex; 4 step grandchildren Tracy (Steve), Sarah (Pete), Aaron (Christine), and Jake (Kelsey); 9 great grandchildren; 8 step great grandchildren; brother, Rodney (Nancy) Hanson; also by nieces, nephews, other relatives and friends.

Besides his parents, Donald was preceded in death by his first wife, (Alma) Jean and sister and brother-in-law, Darleen (Oscar) Heltne.

A memorial service to celebrate the life of Don will be held on Tuesday, February 13, 2024 at 1:00 PM at Central Lutheran Church in Mondovi with interim Pastor Carl Ames officiating.  Interment, with full military honors, will immediately follow at Oak Park Cemetery.  A memorial gathering for family and friends will be held at the church on Tuesday from 11:00 AM until the hour of the service.
