Alvin Sanford “Sandy” Odegard, age 70 of Eau Galle formerly of Mondovi passed away at his home with his loving and devoted family at his side following a courageous battle with ALS. He was born on February 7, 1942 at Mondovi one of ten children of Agnes Werlein Odegard and the late Sanford Odegard. Sandy attended the Canton elementary school then attended and graduated from Mondovi High School. He would always tell his children, “I had to walk to school uphill, both ways, in the snow, sometimes barefoot after doing chores. Shortly after graduation, Sandy honorably served our Country as a member of the United States Army just prior to the Vietnam Conflict. On September 10, 1966 Alvin was united in marriage to Lana Hurlburt at Central Lutheran Church in Mondovi. To this union 3 children were born. Sandy was a sheet metal contractor with Hurlburt Heating and Air Conditioning. Before his employment with Hurlburt HVAC, Sandy was employed at Aqua Mate Pools and was a logger. Sandy was an active member of Valley of the Shepherd Lutheran Church in Mondovi. Sandy’s family remembers him as a “jack of all trades”. He was able to work on cars, woodworking and carpentry and remodeling. Sandy and his wife were able to achieve their dream of moving to the country and with the help of family was able to build their dream, a log home in the country. He absolutely loved and enjoyed the outdoors with fishing, hunting…Everything, and time spent at the hunting shack being his favorite. Sandy will be remembered as a mild mannered man who never had a harsh word to say. Sandy was very proud of his family, his entire family, which includes his aunts, uncles and cousins. Alvin will be sadly missed by his wife, Lana of Eau Galle; three children Lauri (Kevin) Whirry of Barron, Gerald Odegard of New Richmond and Dirk A.S. Odegard of Glenwood City; His mother, Agnes Odegard of Mondovi; brothers and sisters, Marge (Gene) Rice of Mondovi, Stewart “Lenny” (Sadie) Odegard of Eleva, Gerald (Mary) Odegard of Alma, John (partner, Scott) Odegard of Chippewa Falls and Jeanie (Jim) Bauer of Mondovi; four grandchildren, Elizabeth (Friend, Bob) Odegard, Nathaniel (Miranda) Krentz, Brooke Odegard and Claire Odegard; four great grandchildren, Kia, Erica, Austin and Weylan; brothers in law, Gary O’Connell of Mondovi, Perry (Frances) Hurlburt of Durand, Hugh (Claire) Hurlburt of Massachusetts, Glenn (Cathy) Hurlburt of Durand and Horace (Carol) Hurlburt of Eau Galle; sisters in law Lola Hurlburt of Durand, Mary Lou Hurlburt, Montemedia, MN and Joan Hurlburt of Mondovi; also by many nieces, nephews, cousins, other relatives and friends. Sandy was preceded in death by his father, Sanford; 2 brothers, Cecil and Billy Odegard; and two sisters Patricia O’Connell and Audrey Passe also by brothers in law Claire (Florence) Hurlburt, Vivus Hurlburt, and Orville Hurlburt. A funeral service will be held on Thursday February 16 at 11:00 AM at Valley of the Shepherd Lutheran Church, Mondovi with Michael Isaacson officiating. Burial will follow with full military honors, at Thompson Valley Cemetery in rural Mondovi. Visitation will be held on Wednesday, February 15 from 4:00 PM until 7:00 PM at the Poeschel-Talbot Funeral Home, Mondovi and again on Wednesday one hour prior to the service at the church.
