Alton Raymond Herold

Alton Raymond Herold, age 95, of Alma, passed away on Saturday, January 6, 2024 at Gundersen, St. Elizabeth Healthcare Center in Wabasha.

He was born on July 2, 1928 to Romeo and Emma (Wenland) Herold.

Alton attended and graduated from Alma High School with the class of 1946.  

Alton honorably served his Country as a soldier in the United States Army where he was stationed in both France and Germany.

On June 8, 1954, Alton was united in marriage to Gladys Hansen at St. John's Catholic Church in Winona.  To this beloved union, 4; children were born.

Alton was employed at Bay State Milling Co in Winona for several years before he returned to the family homestead farm in rural Alma following the death of his dad, Romeo.  Alton and his family were proud to accept the century farm award.  He worked the farm for 53 years.  Alton also worked for the Town of Belvidere as a grader operator and plowed the Town roads in the Winter months.

Alton was a longtime and faithful member of St. Lawrence Catholic Church in Alma and was active with the Knights of Columbus, Council #6789 where he once served as the treasurer.

He was also a lifetime member of the American Legion, Post 224 of Alma and was a past commander of the post.   Alton served on the Herold Cemetery Board as the treasurer.  

Alton enjoyed deer hunting and spending time with friends from area churches during dartball league.  

Alton is survived by his wife of almost 70 years, Gladys; children, Daniel (Delores), Nancy (Michael) Seifert, Sandra Herold and Tracie Herold;  grandsons, Tony (Nicole) Herold, Joseph Seifert, Mark (Chelsey) Herold and Caleb Herold, Jamey (Heather) Grotjahn, Lonnie (Katrina) Grotjahn; several great grandchildren; sister, Bernice Zuehlke; sister in law, Donna Herold; also by several nieces, nephews, other relatives and friends.

Beside his parents, Alton was preceded in death by his granddaughter, Shannon Seifert and his brother, Burdell Herold.

A funeral Mass will be held on Saturday, January 13, 2024 at 11:00 AM at St. Lawrence Catholic Church in Alma with Father Arul Doss as Celebrant.  A visitation will be held on Friday, January 12 at the Talbot Family Funeral Home, Alma Chapel, from 4PM until 7:00 PM with the reciting of the Most Holy Rosary at 6:45 PM.   Burial, along with full military honors, will be held at 2:00 PM Saturday, January 13 at the Herold Cemetery.
