Allen J. Bensel Sr.of Fountain City passed away on September 26, 2012 in Red Wing, MN.
Allen was born on January 10, 1930, to Gustav and Olivia (Bechly) Bensel in Fountain City, town of Milton, Buffalo County. Allen served in the Army for two years and was stationed in Korea. He married Joyce Larson in 1956. They had three children together and were later divorced.
Allen worked on the farm with his dad and took over the farm when he returned from the service. He then was employed at Warner Swazey, which was later Badger Construction & Equipment, retiring after 40 years. He also worked at Winona Plumbing part time.
He grew watermelons for years and would go to Independence a few times a week to sell them. Allen enjoyed trapping, hunting, and trout fishing. Over the years, Allen enjoyed going on trips and He always commented that he was through all lower 48 states. Allen also made a trip to Alaska by car with his cousin, Ralph, years ago. The last few years he has enjoyed going to the casino traveling by bus or by car.
Allen will be sadly missed by his special and loving companion, Alice Breitung; his three children, Catherine Bensel of Winona, Allen Jr. Bensel and his wife Margaret of Winona, Susan Gebert and her husband David of Cedar Springs, MI; five grandchildren, Dylan and Callie Bensel and Benjamin, Adam and Kenneth Gerbert; six great grandchildren, Emma, Madalyn, Logan, Evan, Grant and Jace; also by Alice’s five children, Greg (Barb) Breitung, Terry (Sue), Breitung, Michelle (Jeff) Konter, Cory (Natalie) Breitung, and Todd (Shelly) Breitung; ten grandchildren and one great grandson; and by nieces, nephews, cousins, other relatives and friends.
Besides his parents, his son in law Louis Bisek, in 2008, preceded Allen in death.
A Visitation will be at Cathedral of the Sacred Heart Church at 360 Main Street, Winona, MN on Monday October 1 at 9:00AM until A Mass of Christian burial at 11:00 AM. Burial will follow at Fountain City, WI Public Cemetery. Honored to serve as pallbearers will be Dylan Bensel, Todd, Tucker, and Cory Breitung, Adam Gerbert, and Reed Konter.
